Relics of the Magis. This shrine, which is behind the high altar of the Cologne Cathedral was made to hold the bones of the Three Kings, (or Three Wise Men) from the Biblical account, after the relics were brought to Cologne (Koln) from Milan in 1164. Construction of the present Cologne Cathedral was begun in 1248 to house these important relics. The relics have attracted a constant stream of pilgrims to Cologne. Regardless of your religious beliefs, it is hard not to be in awe of these amazing works of art. There are actually 3 sarcophagi here, 2 side by side and a third on top. They are made of wood, with gold and silver overlay decorated with filigree, enamel, and over 1000 jewels and beads. The latter include a large number of cameos and intaglio pieces, some pre-Christian.
