Artist's Description

Mainz, Germany in early times was a Roman fort city which commanded the west bank of the Rhine River, at its confluence with the Main River, and formed part of the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire. It was founded by the Romans in the late 1st century BC. Mainz is famous as the home of the invention of the movable-type printing press, since the first books printed using movable type in the West were manufactured in Mainz by Gutenberg in the early 1450s. The first printings were the famous Gutenberg Bibles which are considered to be the most valuable books in the world. This is a view of a Mainz street called Badergasse and on the left is Cafe Dell'Arte at Badergasse 18.
